Rights of wife

Rights of wife: The Almighty Allah says in the Glorious Qur’ān And they (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them in a just manner –

This verse of the Glorious Qur’ān clarifies that the women have same rights as men have-

The following are the rights of wife on her husband-

Mahar (Dower)

The relation of a husband and a wife is a sacred and respected bond in Islam. It, therefore, urges to get married By marriage, the couple are allowed to have intercourse. The dower is fixed for the glorification of a woman’s chastity and in order to highlight the importance of this relation. The dower is not in return of a woman and her chastity; rather it is a gesture of honor from his husband which he presents to his partner of life-

The obligation (wujūb) of dower is proved by the Glorious Qur’ān, Ḥadīth and the unanimous opinion (ijmāʿ) of the Islamic scholars-

Mahar or dower is an amount of money which a husband obligatorily gives to his wife due to marriage contract. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wasllam was reported as saying: “If a man has married a woman for less or more dower and in his heart he has the intention of not paying that mahar, then he has deceived her. If he dies and he has not paid her right then on the Day of Judgment he will be presented before Allah as a rapist-

If he did not give her dower in his lifetime, she will be paid after his demise from his inheritance-

The mahar amount given to the bride at the time of signing the marriage contract is called a ‘muʿajjal’  and the portion that is promised but deferred is called a mu’ajjal (lit. deferred, delayed)-

Amount of dower

According to Imām Abū Ḥanīfah (ra), the minimum amount of dower is ten dirhams (30.618 gm)-

1 dirham : 3gm,61mg,8 microgram * 10=30gm,618miligram Silver-

Sayyidnā ʿAlī (rz) reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wasllam said: The dower (mahar) will not be less than ten dirhams-

There is no fixed amount of dower; but it should be moderate; neither too much nor too less. The dower of almost all of the wives(mother of all believers) and daughters of the Prophet was five hundred dirhams (approximately one kg, five hundred and three gm, and nine hundred ml of silver)-

The Sharīʿah method about the dower is that it should neither be too less that breaks the wife’s heart nor too much that leads to arrogance or it is difficult to be paid-

Sayyidnā ʿUmar ibn Al-Khaṭṭāb (rz) said: Do not exaggerate in the dowers of women. If doing so was honourable in the world or taqwā (piety) before Allah, then Allah’s Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasllam would have been the first of you to do it-Rights of wife
